When I was a kid, I followed my dad and his friends around the woods just hoping to see a deer; not to mention, have an opportunity to shoot at one. I also dreamed of the day I could afford to buy my own gear that mirrored the gear my dad and his friends had! All I wanted was to have the latest and greatest gear, and to shoot deer like my dad and his friends.
With those moments in mind, in 2018, we started a program though Hands of a Sportsman to teach kids to hunt for whitetail. We chose 10 kids and some of them were hunting for the first time. This hunt had two stipulations: be aged 17 or under and have never harvested a deer.
We started off by reaching out to companies in the Outdoors Industry to get gear the kids would need to be successful in their hunt. We were able to get crossbows, broad-heads, targets, blinds, chairs, shooting sticks, camouflage, boots, rangefinders, binoculars, and backpacks. We paired the kids with a guide/mentor who would teach them how to use all of their new gear and, hopefully, the process of filling the freezer for the first time.
This year will be our sixth year working the program and we are looking to make it bigger and better than ever. That is where Sportsman's Heart comes into play. By starting the organization we can focus the effort to expose new people to the outdoors and helping them be successful by whatever means nesasary.
